Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology

Clinical Activities at UCLA and the VA

The Cardiothoracic Division of the UCLA Department of Anesthesiology consists of thirteen fellowship-trained physicians who are certified in advanced perioperative echocardiography. Several have further, advanced training in management of patients with complex, congenital, cardiac disease as well as management of cardiac implanted electronic devices. The cardiothoracic anesthesiologists at UCLA provide care for nearly 1300 patients each year, undergoing cardiac surgical procedures at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center, and the Veterans Administration Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System. Our patients run the gamut from neonates and infants to geriatric patients undergoing all types of cardiac surgeries, including repair of congenital or acquired heart disease, heart and lung transplantation, aortic surgery, and implantation of ventricular assist devices.

Outside the operating room, our group provides anesthesia services in the interventional cardiology and electrophysiology suites at Ronal Reagan UCLA Medical Center, which is home to the largest ventricular arrhythmia center in the Western United States. We also perform diagnostic echocardiography throughout the hospital (operating rooms, surgical suites, interventional cardiovascular laboratories, and the cardiothoracic intensive care units) and electrophysiology consultation (for interrogation and reprogramming of pacemakers and implanted cardioverter-defibrillators) for all surgical patients.
